LAKE WALES – Lake Wales High School has received a “B” for the 2010-2011 school year in the State of Florida’s school grading system.
The grades were released earlier this morning (Jan. 4). “It is an honor to work here with the Lake Wales staff,” said Principal Donna Dunson. “The staff began the work that culminated in this B a long time ago.”
This grade was a result of a collective effort by the administration of Clark Berry, Chris Reams, Daniele Shick, and Eugene Kendrick. The time, effort and leadership of the administration and the staff really made the difference. It was an active role on everyone’s part to make this three consecutive year upgrade happen. LWHS went from a D in 2008-09 to a C in 2009-10 and last year bringing in a B.
School grades are based on a complicated formula that gives weight to categories such as the percentage of high-achieving students in various subject areas; learning gains among the lowest performing students in various subject areas; percent of students tested; participation and performance in accelerated learning opportunities; graduation rate; and postsecondary readiness.
Dunson and her staff will host a short celebration this afternoon. LWHS staff and students already are midway through the 2011-2012 school year, which will be graded using a revised formula. Dunson said she and the staff hope to build on what they already have accomplished.
